However, we also ensure that LSP is used to generate some serious insights for you and your team.

Find out more below:

what is

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® enables participants to use LEGO bricks to create models that express their thoughts, reflections, and ideas.

The LEGO SERIOUS PLAY® method (LSP) is a facilitated thinking, communication, and problem-solving technique for organisations, teams, and individuals.

The concept is based upon extensive business, organisational development, psychology, and learning research, and is based on the concept of “hand knowledge.”

Whilst our brains are limited in how much information they can handle at any one time - the "working memory" - our hands are connected to between 70 to 80 percent of our brain cells.  LSP allows participants to access this "hand knowledge".

HOW WORK

HOW DOES LSP WORK?

The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® empowers participants to take ownership of their own learning. This method has proved best when trying to assist teams in their learning and development.

An LSP workshop can have as few as two participants but typically involves four to eight people, although we can accommodate larger groups.

There's also no pressure to be creatively minded, the LEGO® bricks are used as a metaphor and the focus is not upon what the end product looks like but what the bricks represent.

The basic values of our LSP workshops are:

  • The answer is in the system - Participants are encouraged to express themselves and listen to each other.

  • There is no ONE right answer - Everyone has different views, and this is a good thing. The process enables these different perspectives to come out in the open without anybody saying which is ‘right’ or ‘wrong’.

  • Everyone has a valid contribution - the aim is to discuss and reflect, never to product 'correct' answers or facts.

Our certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitators ensure that our workshops flow so that teams – as individuals and as a group – gain the most from the process.

WHY USE LSP FOR TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES?

Don't professionals find it hard to engage with Lego?

A common concern that we hear when we talk about LEGO® is whether it is something that 'serious professionals' will struggle to get on board with.

This is actually the main reason why we advocate for it! Play is proven to enhance neuroplasticity. The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method works because it gets everyone in flow - even the most serious of partners gets involved and sees the value!

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® lends itself as an activity within a team building day, as well as a stand-alone workshop or planning session. The method, at its core, is designed to facilitate communication and discussion between individuals and groups.  It encourages effective and constructive discussions and encourages individuals to unleash their creative thinking. It is diverse thinking in action.

LSP is ideally suited to:

Team building - LSP supports team members in getting to know each other better or resolving a conflict

Problem-solving - LSP is an excellent tool for working through problems and finding a shared solution

Strategy development - LSP empowers all individuals to contribute their vision of the aims and challenges around strategy, and consolidate these with the ideas of others

Culture change - LSP helps individuals to understan the system better and to see blocks and challenges that are preventing change

Conflict resolution - LSP enables a better understanding of each other’s points of view on a deeper level

• Diversity, Equity & Inclusion - LSP is a powerful tool in the context of DEI. Find out more why here.

CAN'T WE JUST BUY SOME LEGO AND DO IT OURSELVES?

We firmly believe that all LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® workshops should be run by a certified facilitator. And not just because we are certified! Facilitating an LSP workshop is a skill and a craft, something that requires applied knowledge of the area.

Our certified facilitator will encourage your group’s dialogue to focus on its purpose and intent whilst also ensuring that participants feel able to express the ideas and insights that are needed for the group to reach their goal.

Using the essential premise that "the answer is in the system", our facilitator’s main task is to ensure that all participants are able to express themselves, listen to each other, and take each others’ reflections into account.

HOW MIGHT LEGO SERIOUS PLAY BE USED IN PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FIRMS?

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® ensures that everyone is listened to and everyone is equal.  This is just one of the reasons why it is perfect for professional services firms.  These firms can be hierarchical and competitive. LSP removes these elements and creates a unique thinking environment.

LSP has many uses. Some of the ways that we have used LSP with professional services firms include:

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion -  using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to have a listening session where professionals visualised the challenges that exist on the road to partnership.  Find out more  here.

Business Development Workshop - using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to understand what the firm's unique offering was, to help with partners with cross-selling. Find out more here.

Customer Journey Mapping - using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to map clients customer journey and visualise pain points.

Purpose Workshop - using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to reveal what the firm's culture was and to collectively come up with a new set of values.

WHAT IS A FACILITATOR?

A facilitator is more than just a master of ceremonies, a host, or a teacher. A facilitator is a person who helps to guide and manage a group or team. They help the group or team achieve its objectives by promoting effective communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Facilitators create a supportive and inclusive environment.  They use various techniques and methods to encourage active participation, manage conflicts, and ensure that discussions stay focused and productive.

Our facilitators are coaches, and so they are skilled in delivering what is needed in the role.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF AN EXTERNAL FACILITATOR?

Having an external facilitator helps to enhance participation and psychological safety.  Being one step removed from the organisation means they can shine a light on things that the system itself might not be able to see.  The external is free from internal politics and biases. They will say it as they see it. This produces more opportunity to learn.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A FACILITATOR WITH LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®?

The best LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitators understand the methodology and the theory that sits behind it. They also understand facilitation. Our facilitators are all team coaches, so they understand group dynamics and how to ask questions that produce deep learning and insight.

LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is powerful. In the moment, the participants do not have sight of the work that has gone into designing the workshop. Every workshop is unique and designed to explore the specific challenge or insight that the LSP session is intended to cover.  The desired outcome is reached through the skillful asking of questions. Trained facilitators make this look easy.  However, enabling deep reflection is part of the reason why having a facilitator present is so important.
